India’s Upcoming Mega Projects for 2025

India is entering an exciting phase of development, with many upcoming mega projects set to change the country’s landscape. These efforts cover various areas like transportation, energy, city development, and sustainable resources.

From cities to quiet rural areas, these projects aim to fill critical infrastructure gaps, promote sustainable development, and create new job opportunities. For example, new transport systems and airports are being built to reduce urban traffic and improve regional connections. Here is a list of some of the notable upcoming projects in India that are set to shape the country’s infrastructure and economic landscape.

Upcoming Mega Projects in India

1. Central Vista Redevelopment

The Central Vista Redevelopment Project in New Delhi seeks to revamp India’s central administrative area near Raisina Hill. This project includes the construction of a new Parliament building, a central secretariat, and other government buildings. With an estimated cost of ₹20,000 crores (approx. $2.4 billion), the redevelopment started in 2020 and is expected to be completed by 2026. The project is in progress, with the new Parliament building’s construction well underway. The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) is managing the project, with Shapoorji Pallonji and Company Ltd. and Tata Projects Ltd. involved in construction.

2. Khavda Renewable Energy Park

The Khavda Renewable Energy Park in Kutch, Gujarat, aims to be one of the world’s largest renewable energy parks, harnessing both solar and wind energy. This project is expected to significantly boost India’s renewable energy capacity and reduce carbon emissions. The estimated cost is ₹1.5 trillion (approx. $18 billion).

Initiated in 2020, the project is expected to be completed by 2027. Currently, initial development phases, including land allocation and infrastructure setup, are in progress. The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) and Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) are responsible for the development.

3. GIFT City

GIFT City (Gujarat International Finance Tec-City) in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, is envisioned as a global financial and IT services hub. The project aims to create a world-class business district, attracting investments and boosting the state’s economy. The estimated cost is ₹78,000 crores (approx. $9.5 billion). Construction began in 2007, with Phase I expected to be completed by 2023 and the entire project by 2030. Presently, several buildings and infrastructure components are already operational. The project is undertaken by Gujarat International Finance Tec-City Company Ltd. (GIFTCL), a joint venture of the Government of Gujarat and Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS).

4. Navi Mumbai International Airport

Navi Mumbai International Airport in Maharashtra is a greenfield airport project designed to alleviate congestion at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. The airport is expected to cost ₹167 billion (approx. $2 billion).

Construction began in 2018, with the airport expected to be operational by 2024. Currently, the project is progressing with land acquisition and groundwork in advanced stages. The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) and the GVK Group are undertaking the construction.

5. Kochi Water Metro Project

The Kochi Water Metro Project in Kerala aims to provide an integrated water transport system, connecting 10 islands around Kochi. This project aims to reduce traffic congestion, enhance public transport, and provide a cleaner and more efficient commuting option. With an estimated cost of ₹1,137 crores (approx. $140 million), the project began in 2016 and is expected to be completed in 2023. Currently, the project is in its advanced stages of implementation, with trial runs and partial operations already started. The project is being undertaken by Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL).

6. Bharatmala Pariyojana

Bharatmala Pariyojana is an extensive road and highway development program designed to improve freight and passenger movement across India. By bridging critical infrastructure gaps, this project will boost economic activities and connectivity.

The program’s estimated cost is ₹5.35 trillion (approx. $65 billion). Launched in 2017, the first phase was expected to be completed by 2022, with subsequent phases to follow. As of now, significant progress has been made, with several highways and expressways either completed or under construction. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is responsible for executing this project.

7. Chenab Bridge

The Chenab Bridge in Jammu and Kashmir is a monumental infrastructure project aiming to be the world’s highest railway bridge. It will connect the Bakkal and Kauri areas, improving accessibility and fostering economic growth in the region.

The bridge is expected to cost ₹1,250 crores (approx. $150 million). Construction began in 2004, and the bridge is expected to be completed in 2022. Currently, the bridge is nearing completion, with the arch and other major components already in place. The construction is being undertaken by Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) in collaboration with AFCONS Infrastructure Limited.

8. Puga Geothermal Energy Project

The Puga Geothermal Energy Project in the Puga Valley of Ladakh is set to be India’s first geothermal power project. It aims to harness geothermal energy to produce electricity, contributing to the region’s energy needs and promoting sustainable development. The estimated cost is ₹5,000 crores (approx. $600 million).

The project started in 2021 and is expected to be completed by 2025. Currently, the project is in the exploratory and initial development stages. The construction is being undertaken by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) in collaboration with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).

9. Sagarmala Programme

The Sagarmala Programme is a nationwide initiative to improve India’s coastline infrastructure and promote port-led development. The program aims to enhance the logistics sector, reduce transportation costs, and create new job opportunities, significantly impacting coastal communities and the overall economy. Over 500 projects have been identified under this program, with 431 already under implementation or completed. The Ministry of Shipping, Government of India, is overseeing the implementation of this programme.

10. Supernova Spira

Supernova Spira, a supertall skyscraper in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, will include residential apartments, offices, and retail spaces. This project aims to redefine the city’s skyline and provide luxurious living and working spaces. While the exact cost of Supernova Spira is not available, it is part of the larger Supertech Supernova project. Construction started in 2012, with completion expected by 2025. The project is ongoing, with significant portions of the structure already erected. Supertech Limited is the developer responsible for this project.
